They also had lead cups and when they would drink their ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. They would be walking along the road and here would be someone knocked out and they thought they were dead. So they would pick them up and take them home and get them ready to bury. They realized if they were too slow about it, the person would wake up. So they would lay them out on the kitchen table for a couple of days, the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. That's where the custom of holding a “wake” came from.



사람들은 납으로 된 컵에 맥주나 위스키를 마셨다. 그 조합은 그들을 며칠씩 실신시켜버렸다. 길을 가다가 이런 사람을 보면 죽었다고 여겼다. 그래서 집으로 데리고 와 묻을 준비를 했는데 아주 늦게 묻으면 그 사람이 다시 깰어 날 수도 있다는 것을 알았다. 그래서 그런 이들을 식탁위에 한 이틀 두고 가족 들이 모여 먹고 마시며 깨어나는 지를 보게 되었고, 그로부터 wake(밤샘)라는 풍습이 생겼다고 한다.



Since England is so old and small they started running out of places to bury people. So they started digging up some coffins and would take their bones to a house and re-use the grave. They started opening these coffins and found some had scratch marks on the inside.



영국은 오래되고 작은 나라라서 사람을 묻을 곳이 부족해지기 시작했다. 그래서 땅에서 관을 파내 뼈는 집으로 가져가고 무덤을 재사용 하곤 했다. 그런데 관 안에 긁힌 자국이 있었다고 한다.(술 마시고 기절한 이를 묻었을 수도…)



One out of 25 coffins were that way and they realized they had still been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on their wrist and lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell. That is how the saying “graveyard shift” was made. If the bell would ring they would know that someone was “saved by the bell” or he was a “dead ringer”.



25개 관중 한 개꼴로 그랬으므로, 그들은 산 사람을 매장했을 수도 있었다는 것을 깨닫고, 죽은 자의 손목에 끈을 묶어서 땅 밖으로 꺼내서 종에다 묶어 놓았다. 누군가는 종소리를 들으려 밤새 공동묘지에 앉아 있었고, 거기서 graveyard shift(철야 근무)라는 말이 생겨났다. 종이 울리면 사람들은 saved by the bell(구사일생)으로 살았다는 말을 했고, 그렇게 살아난 사람을 죽은 자가 종을 울렸다는 dead ringer(꼭 닮은 자/것)라는 말을 쓰게 되었다.
