지난회에 이어 영어 단어나 속담의 기원을 16세기 영국의 삶을 통해 알아보겠습니다. 여자 애들이 좋아하는 공주침대, a.k.a(also known as 일명) canopy bed가 어떻게 나오게 됐는지 볼까요?

Since there was nothing to stop things from falling into the house they would just try to clean up a lot. But this posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings from animals could really mess up your nice clean bed, so they found if they would make beds with big posts and hang a sheet over the top it would prevent that problem. That's where those beautiful big 4 poster beds with canopies came from.

(밀짚으로 된 지붕에서) 이 것 저것이 집안으로 떨어지는 것을 막을 수 없어 사람들은 청소를 많이 하곤 했다. 그런데 벌레나 다른 동물들의 똥은 침실을 엉망으로 만들어 심각한 문제를 야기했다. 그래서 그들은 큰 막대가 달린 침대를 만들어 그 위를 천으로 걸면 그 문제를 막을 수 있으리라 여겼다. 그래서 네 개의 큰 막대가 달린 침대에 덮개가 있는 아름다운 침대가 생기게 되었다.

When you came into the house you would notice most times that the floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, that's where the saying “dirt poor” came from. The wealthy would have slate floors. That was fine but in the winter they would get slippery when they got wet. So they started to spread *thresh on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on they would just keep adding it and adding it until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. So they put a piece of wood at the entry way, a “thresh hold(threshold)”

집안에 들어오면 대부분 바닥은 흙이었다. 부자들만 흙이 아닌 뭔가를 깔았는데, 거기서 더럽게 가난하다(dirt poor)라는 말이 생겼다고 한다. (우리나라도 뭔가를 강조할 때 더럽게라는 말을 붙이는 경우가 있는데`더럽게 부자야'등등.) 부자들은 slate를 바닥에 깔았다. 그것은 괜찮았지만 겨울에 젖으면 미끄러웠다. 그래서 발디딤을 하려고 탈곡한 것을 뿌리기 시작했다. 겨울이 깊어감에 따라, 문을 열 때마다 뿌려둔 탈곡한 것이 밖으로 밀려나갔으므로 계속 뿌려야했다. 그래서 입구에 탈곡한 것(thresh)을 뿌린 것을 잡아 두려고(hold) 나무토막을 두었는데 그 것이 오늘날의 문지방(threshold)이 되었다고 한다.
